What is Repertoire Building?

Repertoire building is simply building up the number and kind of pieces a musician can perform with minimal rehearsal. This requires specific and pointed practice to get to know that specific piece well enough that it becomes an integral resource when you are deciding what to play, whether for your own pleasure or in performance for others.
Repertoire building can also help a musician round off some of the techniques and practical concepts that they either have not yet learned or have forgotten over the years.

Why would Repertoire Building be a good choice for me?

You've taken 3-4 years of piano lessons already.

Depending on how old you are when you start taking lessons, you'll be ready to focus on musical pieces that aren't part of your curriculum learning around year 3 or 4. At this point, you'll have learned all the basics of piano theory and technique and can start working on more complex pieces and techniques as well as applying everything you've learned so far.

You've been teaching yourself to play, but need some additional support to work on harder or more complex pieces.

Many students, especially young adults, teach themselves to play piano at the basic level, but reach a certain point where they need some extra guidance and support to further their music goals. Repertoire building, with the assistance of an instructor can be the perfect match!

You want to focus on a particular genre of music.

A wide variety of music is good for a repertoire, but sometimes you just want to focus on the techniques, styles, and sub-genres of a single type of music. Whether you want to learn Classical, Jazz and Blues, or Modern Worship Anthems, focusing on the ins and outs of a single genre through repertoire building is a great way to accomplish your goals.
