1. I LOVE teaching!
My dad always said I should get a music degree. I disagreed. The idea of spending every day with other musicians made me want to run away screaming. Through a series of weird (fortunate) circumstances, I ended up teaching a couple of kids piano in late 2008. It turns out my dad was right! I LOVE teaching! It’s so much fun to share the things I know with others and help them understand how to play music in ways that make them happy. Who knew? (Thanks, Dad…)
2. Music is my love language
Okay, okay, so technically, it’s not a “love language”, but I do respond to music as though it is. Wanna make my day better? Sing me a silly song. Wanna get me a great present? I have a pot holder that says, “Too hot to Handel”, which makes me smile every time I use it. My day can be made 1000% better by listening to an album by a band I love or one I’ve never heard before. Music is my filter for experiencing life in the best way.
3. I have a special set of skills I’ve developed over many years
This kind of goes with the whole “I love teaching” thing, but I really do have all of these skills that I’ve learned, and practiced, and developed over my 37+ years of playing piano. I can’t just keep them to myself, can I? I’ve discovered that sharing my knowledge with others even helps me learn how to play better and reminds me of things that I’ve totally forgotten about over the years. It’s just a win-win situation.
4. The world needs more artists
I know it seems like there is so much darkness and bad in the world. Each of us has to fight against it with whatever we can. I believe the world needs more artists and musical artists are great! I want to bring the joy and fun of music into others’ lives so they can spread it further. The world is ALWAYS a better place with more artists in it.
5. I get to meet the coolest people
I have taught people of all ages, genders, shapes, sizes, and musical experience and Every. Single. One. Of them. Is. AWESOME. Music is one thing that brings us together regardless of our differences. We can learn from each other in ways that enrich everyone’s experience and future. I remember every single student I’ve ever had and I cherish the memories we made together during their time with my studio.
